How Does Craniosacral Therapy Work?
The Sacro-Occipital Technique begins with an analysis of your spine in three different positions:
- Vertical: Standing or sitting up straight
- Prone: Lying flat chest down, back up
- Supine: Lying flat face and chest up
In each of these positions, we analyze how well the cerebrospinal fluid flows from the brain through the spine. We then make the necessary adjustments to improve the flow of the spinal fluid.
During the adjustment process, we examine the skull to make adjustments to the cranial bones, while massaging the vertebrae. This procedure removes the blockage in the spine and allows the cerebrospinal fluid to flow. We may perform this procedure in one or all three spinal positions.
The Purpose of Craniosacral Therapy
The purpose of Craniosacral Therapy is to allow the cerebrospinal fluid to flow properly and improve transmission of the nerve impulses from the brain to the spine. The same technique can be used to correct misalignment in the pelvis, which leads to problems with your posture.
In essence, the purpose of Craniosacral Therapy is to create blockage-free alignment from the brain all the way down to the pelvis. By improving imbalances in both the skull and pelvis, we can improve brain transmission along the spinal column.
Craniosacral Therapy is not intended to relieve pain directly. Instead, we utilize this method to enhance the body’s healing capabilities, which, will, in turn, address health or physical conditions.
The Craniosacral Therapy Technique
Although Craniosacral Therapy follows a standard procedure, perfecting and applying the technique takes years of training and study for the treatment to be effective. The reason our patients prefer the technique is because we approach therapy with a gentle, non-invasive, hands-on healing approach that focuses on pulses through your body.
During a one-to-two-hour session, you lie in a flat, horizontal position. The therapist selects points around the head, torso, knees, and feet, applying gentle finger pressure along the way. This method requires no thrusts that are commonly used in chiropractic bone or joint manipulation. Our goal while using this approach is to remove any restrictions in this system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.
The Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy
Extensive research suggests that there are numerous benefits to Craniosacral Therapy. It may relieve compression in the neck, head, or back and ease tension and physical stress. It can also release restriction in the head, neck, and nerves.
Patients often report that Craniosacral Therapy has treated many of their conditions such as:
- Migraines and headaches
- Sinus infections
- Neck Pain
- Ear infections or colic
- Whiplash recovery
- Anxiety or depression
