How Kinesio Taping Works
Kinesio tape consists of cotton fibers with polymer elastic strands intertwined. Unlike traditional athletic tape that restricts blood flow and range of motion, kinesiology tape is pliable and allows the user to move freely. Kinesiology tape offers the same amount of structural and muscular support as athletic tape, but without the constriction.
When we apply the tape to the affected area, it lifts the skin to create a small space between the muscle and the dermis skin layer. By creating additional space, the tape lightens the pressure caused by swelling in an injury. It allows drainage and blood to flow more fluidly. Although the open space is tiny, it’s just enough to stimulate movement in the swelling area.
The Benefits of Kinesio Taping in Therapy
Patients who have undergone Kinesio tape therapy have noticed the following results:
Kinesio tape improves mobility by increasing circulation and reducing the pressure in the affected. Patients feel like they can move easier.
The tape provides support and stability to the joints, muscles, tendons, and other weak areas.
By opening up the skin layer, the nerve receptors are less compacted and more free to deliver sensory information to the brain, which sends the information out to the rest of the body.
The treatment improves the interaction between the skin and the underlying structures.
Kinesio taping restores the neural circuitry in the muscles, tendons, joints, and skin. It reduces pain and swelling and improves muscle performance and function. Kinesio taping is especially useful for athletes who suffer from sprains, back pain, repetitive movement, and other sports-related conditions.
How to Apply Kinesiology Tape at Home
Although we apply Kinesio tape in the clinic, it is possible for you to continue treatment at home. We recommend that seek the advice of our physical therapist before you apply the tape yourself. We can show you how to apply the tape and which tape is best for your condition.
Here are some tips for preparing and applying the tape.
Clean the skin surface with regular soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Dry the skin thoroughly and remove any excess hair or towel lint.
Round the tape at the corners before you cut it to prevent the edges from peeling before application. Avoid touching the adhesive side of the tape.
First, apply the anchor end with no tension. Second, apply therapeutic tension. Third, apply the other anchor end. All anchor points must contact the skin.
Wait one hour before you engage in any activities that include water or sweating. Pat the tape gently with a towel after exercising, swimming, showering.
